Six rules for habits that stick, and medicines on time.

15 October 2026 · 6 habits · by the Lifeable team

Habits don't fail from lack of willpower. They fail from being too big, floating free of the day, and breaking twice in a row. These six rules make a habit small, attached and forgiving — and two of them are about the body the habits are for.

1. Start embarrassingly small

Two push-ups. One page. One glass of water.

Big habits fail because day one is too hard. Make the first version so small it feels silly — and do it every day. Once it sticks, grow it.

Today
  1. Pick one habit you want
  2. Make it a two-minute version
  3. Add it for the days you'll do it

Small and daily beats big and rare.

2. Stack a new habit on an old one

After coffee, I will…

New habits stick best when attached to something you already do. "After I brush my teeth, I will stretch for two minutes." The old habit becomes the reminder.

Today
  1. Choose a daily habit you already have
  2. Attach one new small habit to it
  3. Set the habit at that time

Let the old habit carry the new one.

3. Never miss twice

Missing once is normal. Twice starts a new habit.

Everyone misses a day. What matters is the next day. Make it a rule: never miss twice in a row. The streak can restart; the habit stays.

Today
  1. Look at your habits this week
  2. Find one you missed
  3. Do it today, even the small version

Get back on the next day.

4. Sleep is a schedule

Same wake time, better days.

Good sleep starts with a fixed wake-up time, even on weekends. Your body learns the rhythm and bedtime follows. Start with the wake time; the rest gets easier.

Today
  1. Choose a wake time you can keep daily
  2. Add it as a habit
  3. Keep screens away for the last 30 minutes

Rest is the base of a good day.

5. Medicines on time

Set it once, stop worrying about it.

Whether it's your own medicine or a parent's, missed doses add up. Add each medicine with its times and let the reminders do the remembering. Tick it when taken.

Today
  1. Add any medicine taken regularly at home
  2. Set its times
  3. Add when the refill is due

Care made simple.

6. Book the check-up

The appointment you keep postponing.

Yearly check-ups, eye tests, dental cleanings — easy to postpone, costly to skip. Pick one you're overdue for and book it this week.

  2. Book it
  3. Add the appointment with a reminder
